Abstract

This study aimed at investigating levels of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, platelet lymphocyte ratio, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in uncomplicated malaria. Blood sample was collected to evaluate complete blood count (to measure levels of inflammatory markers (neutrophil to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio)). Blood samples were also collected for Coagulation studies (Prothrombin time and Activated Partial Thromboplastin time) and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate. Demographic and clinical information were collected using pre-tested questionnaire. Data was analysed with Graph Pad Prism version 10.2.2. Results revealed that total white blood cell count, granulocyte percentage, neutrophil-leukocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), prothrombin time (PT), and the international normalized ratio (INR) were statistically decreased (P < 0.05), except lymphocyte percentage which was significantly increased (p < 0.05), in subjects with uncomplicated malaria compared to control; while, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), haemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume (PCV), MID percentage showed no significant change (P > 0.05). However, the total white blood cell count, granulocyte percentage, lymphocyte percentage, neutrophil-leukocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), prothrombin time (PT), and the international normalized ratio (INR) did not correlate significantly with the level of parasitaemia in the patients with uncomplicated malaria
