Abstract

Nollywood has emerged a significant player in the global film ecosystem, captivating audiences through its distinctive storytelling and cultural resonance. Consequently, it is recognized as the fastest-growing film industry worldwide. This rapid growth has generated unprecedented demand for skilled and unskilled labour, thereby creating employment opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds. Nonetheless, Nollywood's job-creating capacity remains underrated and insufficiently harnessed. This study aims to assess Nollywood's employment-generating potential, its present utilization, and its prospects for expansion. It investigates the multifaceted role of Nollywood in fostering job creation within the Nigerian economy by analysing both direct and indirect  employment streams. While the industry is estimated to provide over one million jobs annually, questions remain regarding whether its potential exceeds this figure, particularly when compared with less productive film industries elsewhere. Beyond the film value chain, Nollywood stimulates auxiliary employment in hospitality, tourism, fashion, and advertising, thereby broadening its economic impact across sectors and national borders. The study adopts a qualitative methodology, drawing on participant observation, existing literature, industry reports, and case studies. Guided by value theory, the research evaluates Nollywood not only in terms of its economic significance but also as a generator of social value through cultural representation, identity formation, and inclusive participation. By situating employment creation within both economic and social value frameworks, this study highlights how  Nollywood contributes to sustainable development. Findings suggest that Nollywood possesses substantial yet underutilized capacity for job creation, which is often mismanaged and undervalued. The study therefore recommends that its employment potential be better harnessed and reorganized through deliberate interventions by government, regulatory bodies, and private sector stakeholders. Strengthening these structures will ensure that Nollywood's contributions to both economic productivity and social value are fully realized.
