Keywords:

Proverbs, an aspect of language used in the exchange of ideas, are an integral part of the Tiv cultural worldview, conveying wisdom and experiences. However, beneath the seemingly innocuous surface of many Tiv proverbs, lies a complex web of negative connotations that warrant critical examination. Using John Austin's Speech Act Theory, the paper undertakes a critical analysis of
selected Tiv proverbs, exposing their darker undertones and the cultural contexts that shape their meanings. The study reveals how these proverbs perpetuate harmful norms and are used to legitimize social vices. By unpacking the negative connotations of these proverbs, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of a part of Tiv cultural wisdom and its impact on societal values. The research uses both primary and secondary sources of data. Primary sources of data are the authors' understanding of Tiv language as well as interviews of Tiv elders who were able to avail the authors with the desired proverbs. Secondary sources of data were obtained from some already published proverbs by some authors.
