Abstract

This study examines the role of digital reference services in promoting information literacy within Nigerian academic libraries. In the contemporary digital age, academic research increasingly relies on online resources, electronic databases, and remote learning platforms, making the ability to locate, evaluate, and use information critically an essential skill for students, faculty, and researchers. Digital reference services, delivered via email consultations, live chat, virtual meetings, and integrated library systems, provide real-time guidance, enabling users to develop effective search strategies, assess source credibility, and apply ethical information practices. The study highlights how integrating information literacy into digital reference interactions enhances research competencies, fosters independent learning, and strengthens critical thinking skills. It also identifies key challenges that hinder the effectiveness of these services in Nigerian academic libraries, including limited technological infrastructure, inadequate funding, insufficient staff training, and varying user expectations. Drawing on a review of relevant literature and case examples from universities such as the University of Lagos, the University of Ibadan, and Ahmadu Bello University, the study proposes practical strategies to strengthen digital reference–based information literacy services. These include investment in modern infrastructure, continuous professional development for librarians, policy integration, faculty collaboration, and ongoing assessment of service effectiveness. The study concludes that the strategic integration of information literacy and digital reference services is critical for advancing academic research, fostering lifelong learning, and ensuring equitable access to quality information in Nigerian higher education.
