The rapid expansion of the 21st-century digital economy has positioned data as a critical resource for economic growth, innovation, and decision-making, particularly in Nigeria. This conceptual and analytical paper examined data literacy from the perspective of students of Computer Science Education, arguing that data literacy is a foundational competence for effective participation in a data-driven society. It discussed the nature of Nigeria’s digital economy, the role of Computer Science Education students in developing data literacy, and their strategic relevance within the contemporary digital economy. It is argued that Computer Science Education students occupy a dual role as both participants in the emerging digital economy and future educators who will shape the data practices and digital competencies of subsequent generations. The paper concludes that integrating technical, pedagogical, and ethical dimensions of data literacy in universities' curricula is crucial for preparing students to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s digital transformation and for promoting inclusive and sustainable digital development.
